In World War II, the United States was worried that Hawaii could be occupied by the Japanese. One of the concerns was that the cash held in banks on the islands would be looted and used to purchase weapons and materials to be used against the United States. To prevent this, paper currency in Hawaii was replaced by notes like this that had the word “Hawaii” written in large print on the back. Any occupation of Hawaii would immediately result in these dollars being immediately declared worthless.
